WHAT IS A SLEEP STUDY (POLYSOMONOGRAPH)?

A Polysomnogram is a measurement of brain waves, eye movement, muscle activity, heart rate, and respiratory function. A sleep disorder can have an adverse effect on one’s health and quality of life, which may include disrupted sleep apnea. If left untreated, it may result in hypertension, headaches, stroke, heart attack, fatigue related to vehicle and work accidents, and decrease in quality of life.  If your physician orders what is called a “split study,” this means that if you stop breathing (obstructed sleep apnea) a certain amount of times during the sleep study or your oxygen levels drop, we will use a device called a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) to establish the appropriate pressure if you snore.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY SLEEP STUDY?

  • Avoid caffeine drinks for 8 – 12 hours prior to testing
  • Avoid alcohol beverages 24 hours prior to testing
  • Avoid sleeping tablets or tranquilizers
  • Arrive showered with hair clean and dry

WHAT HAPPENS ONCE I ARRIVE AT THE SLEEP LAB?

  • The sleep technologist provides a briefing.
  • When it’s time to sleep, the technologist attaches all the necessary sensors to your body. You will be able to read, watch T.V and relax for a while
  • As you sleep, the device monitors your brainwaves, heart rate, breathing, oxygen levels, leg movements, and other parameters.
  • The cameras in the room monitor your sleep and inform the technologist in case a sensor comes loose.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

  • The attached questionnaire packet (completed)
  • Any medications prescribed by your physician that are required to be taken
  • Comfortable sleep attire
  • Your favorite pillow
  • Regular day clothing for the next day, if desired
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and any other items you use for your nighttime routine.
  • A caregiver or family member if any assistance is needed- REQUIRED

Home Sleep Testing

Home Sleep Testing is our easiest, least intrusive and most affordable testing option, allowing you to get the diagnostic information you need from the comfort of your own bed. Your doctor will provide you with a small, portable device that you will take home and wear for one or two nights. While you are getting your beauty rest, the device records breathing patterns, heart rate, oxygen levels and other data that our team can download and analyze. This helps your doctor determine whether sleep apnea is present, and what the best treatment is for you.

IS HOME SLEEP TESTING RIGHT FOR ME?

The home sleep test is primarily used to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea, not other sleep disorders. In some cases, if the homes sleep study highlights certain anomalies that require further investigation; we may recommend an in-lab sleep test for further accuracy. Discuss your specific situation with your provider, to see if you are a candidate for home sleep testing.
